An Eternal Valentine
I woke up early today to chase the sunrise with my mother. We drove through downtown Martinez as the golden sun peeked through the hills and got us giddy. I had heard there might be a Mimosa tree down the road. Camera ready we walked, admiring the light as we sauntered into the day. There was a stillness before the birds began their daily worship rehearsal as the light began to paint itself across the hills, through oak trees and onto our path.
We turned the final corner and there it was: a full bloom tree, like Sesame Street Big Bird’s cousin, laughing in the light. Pom Poms unlocking joy, uncaffeinated but brought to life by beauty. Carrying a few fallen branches back home, a fresh bouquet now sits happy in our living room.
As Valentine’s day approaches, I’m reminded that everyday eternal love surrounds us daily. I didn’t used to be a fan of the hallmark holiday (after some traumatic elementary school drama I avoided boys for a long while). It wasn ‘t until my Junior year living at the Jesus Burger’s home I found a new appreciation for Febuary 14. My roommate that year shouted and danced that morning ”I JUST LOVE LOVE!!”. We spent the day blessing people with flowers and encouraging notes and ended in an Agapé pot-luck love feast with friends. Ever since I’ve celebrated this day in new ways. In Paris we hosted an annual Galentine’s party for women to know they are deeply loved. This well of eternal love keeps flowing daily in the generosity of creation, the kindness of humanity and the rising sun.
