HOME IS____________?
A collective exhibition featuring six female artists exploring the themes of identity and home. What is home? How do we shape who we are based on our environment? Elvire, Hope, Kimia, Marissa, Rebecca, and Wen Li address these questions through photography, poetry, essays, paintings, and other mediums. They represent France, the United States, Iran, and China, looking for answers to the universal need for belonging.
Une exposition collective de six artistes qui explorent les thèmes de l'identité et le "chez-soi." Qu'est-ce que c'est le "chez-soi"? Comment est-ce qu'on crée son identité en s'appuyant sur son milieu? Elvire, Hope, Kimia, Marissa, Rebecca, et Wen Li parlent de ces questions à travers de la photographie, la poésie, les essais, la peinture, et des autres matières. Elles viennent de la France, les États-Unis, la Chine, et l'Iran, et elles sont à la recherche des réponses au besoin universel de trouver sa place.
Home is both here and there
Hope is defined as the expectation for something to come, the unseen. I am daily asked the question, “tu viens d’ou?”, where are you from? I thought home was where ocean horizon lines and sunshine was abundant, California. I’m learning to find those things in the landscape of humanity, in the brokenness of Paris.
I come from the seeds of prayer and light.
Home is my family, my mother’s chocolate chip cookies and father’s humour.
Home is the memory of my Grandfather driving in his 1976 mercedes, passed down generations. It’s a summer rose garden and the rooftops of Paris.
Its found in intentional gatherings and spontaneous happenings
Home is you, me and those who become community.
Home is here and there. It’s the final north, the thing that leads me towards heaven and being welcomed and known. Home is that which teaches me to hope and hang on. Heaven is home, and I’m learning to cultivate it here in the beautiful mess of humanity.
La maison est à la fois ici et là
L'espoir est défini comme l'attente de quelque chose à venir, l'invisible. On me pose tous les jours la question "tu viens d'où" ? Je pensais que ma maison c’était l'endroit où l'horizon et le soleil étaient omniprésents, en Californie. Je suis entrain d'apprendre à trouver ces choses dans le paysage de l'humanité, dans la fragilité de Paris.
Je viens des semences de la prière et de la lumière.
Chez moi, c'est ma famille, les "chocolate chip cookies" de ma mère et l'humour de mon père.
La maison c’est le souvenir de mon grand-père conduisant sa Mercedes de 1976, transmise de génération en génération. C'est une roseraie d'été et les toits de Paris.
On la trouve dans les happenings intentionnels et les événements spontanés.
La maison, c'est toi, moi et ceux qui deviennent une communauté.
La maison est ici et là. C'est le dernier nord, la chose qui me conduit vers le ciel et qui m'accueille et me fait connaître. La maison est ce qui m'apprend à espérer et à me maintenir. Le Ciel est chez moi, et j'apprends à le cultiver ici, dans le beau désordre de l'humanité.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Marissa
Film photographer, Francophile, flâneuse. Always a writer, occasional poet, trained as a journalist. A lover of bookshops, ice cream, and skirts with pockets, and searching for the best croissant in Paris. My artistic focus is portraits of women, because I believe love is to reveal the beauty of a woman to herself. When not making portraits and pursuing other photographic projects, you can most likely found me at the nearest florist.
Photographe argentique, francophile, flâneuse. Toujours une écrivaine, occasionnellement poète, formée en journalisme. Passionnée des librairies, des glaces, et des jupes avec des poches. A la recherche du meilleur croissant à Paris. Je fais principalement des portraits de femmes, car je crois que l’amour, c’est révéler la beauté d’une femme à elle-même. Quand je ne photographie pas des portraits ni poursuis des autres projets photographiques, je suis probablement chez la fleuriste.
Wen li
I am a Chinese visual artist who works mainly on themes of anti-urbanism. Walking through cities and nature, this network is built by roads and paths under the feet. The network is not only built between the city and the countryside, it is also built by the emotional changes between human beings. At the same time, an in-depth observation of the relationship between nature and the inhabitants of the city is necessary to focus on environmental, social and psychological issues.

Je suis une artiste plasticienne chinoise qui travaille principalement sur le réseau d’anti-urbanisme. Parcourant les villes et la nature, ce réseau est construit par des routes et des chemins sous nos pieds. Le réseau est non seulement construit entre la ville et la campagne, il est aussi construit par les changements émotionnels entre les êtres humains. En même temps, une observation approfondie sur des relations entre la nature et les habitants de la ville est nécessaire pour se concentrer sur les problématiques environnementales, sociales et psychologiques.

Je suis étudiante en Master 2 Arts-Plastiques Recherches Internationales à Paris Panthéon Sorbonne. Dans mon parcours, j’ai multiplié́ les rencontres avec la photographie : que ce soit à Aix En Provence, à Bruxelles ou à Paris. Chaque endroit m’a apporté un nouvel angle d’approche de ce médium qui me permet de m’exprimer pleinement. J’associe ce dernier à la vidéo et les installations. J’utilise l’art comme témoin du présent et médium de compréhension du futur. Les thèmes que j’aborde dans ma pratique sont nombreux : le corps, la transparence, l’identité, les réseaux … Je construis et créer mes images en portant une attention particulière à la couleur et au cadrage. J’ai réalisé plusieurs commandes photographiques et participé à diverses missions de photoreportage.
I am a graduate student in the Visual Art International Research program at Paris Panthéon Sorbonne. I have practiced photography in Aix En Provence, Brussels and Paris - each place has given me a new approach to photography that allows me to express myself fully. Photography, video and installation are the mediums I use to explore the present in order to understand the future. Much of my work focuses on themes of body, transparency, identity, social media and networks and I use color and framing to help construct these images. I have worked on commissioned pieces and participated in various photo-reportage missions.
Kimia
I am an Iranian artist living in Paris, pursuing a Masters of Art at the Pantheon-Sorbonne. At ten years old I started to paint with watercolor, which led me to my first solo exhibition at the age of fifteen. My work is heavily influenced by the Persian and Oriental art of my home country. I visualize the world with an abundance of color, which is omnipresent in my work. Within my work, I hope to communicate the beauty of culturally inspired art to promote acceptance and tolerance and encourage a more harmonious world. Painting, sculpture and installation are my preferred mediums, working always with a link to my heritage and roots. I have gained recognition through my participation in exhibitions and biennales in Great Britain, Iran, Serbia, France and Malaysia.

Je suis une artiste iranienne. Je vis actuellement à Paris, où je fais mes études à l’université en master d’arts-plastiques. J’ai commencé à peindre à l’aquarelle à 10 ans, et j’ai connu ma première exposition personnelle à 15 ans. Je suis fortement influencée par l’art persan et oriental de mon pays natal. Je visualise un monde débordant de couleur, omniprésente dans mon travail. J’essaie de communiquer la beauté d’un art d’inspiration culturelle pour encourager l’acceptation et la tolérance et pour promouvoir un monde plus harmonieux. Je travaille la peinture, la sculpture mais aussi les installations ; toujours en lien avec d’où je viens. J’ai participé à plusieurs expositions et biennales en Angleterre, Iran, Serbie, France et en Malaisie.

Rebecca
I am a Black-American photographer currently living in Paris, France on a Fulbright grant. I consider myself a storyteller, using my images to document and share narratives on the themes of family, identity and home. There are many stories that you can’t put into words, and often times they can’t be told at all— they are painful, complex or don’t have the opportunities to be heard; and those are the ones that interest me the most. There is a beautiful effect that occurs when you confront a portrait of someone. You can feel their emotions, see the past in their eyes and sense their power and strength. It is within these affects that you can empathize with the subject and see the story from their perspective.
Je suis une photographe noire-américaine vivant actuellement à Paris, en France avec une bourse Fulbright. Je me considère comme une conteuse, utilisant mes images pour documenter et partager des récits sur les thèmes de la famille, de l'identité et du foyer. Il y a beaucoup d'histoires qu'on ne peut pas mettre en mots, et souvent on ne peut pas les raconter du tout - elles sont douloureuses, complexes ou n'ont pas l'occasion de se faire entendre ; et ce sont celles qui m'intéressent le plus. Il y a un bel effet qui se produit lorsque vous faites face à un portrait de quelqu'un. Vous pouvez sentir leurs émotions, voir le passé dans leurs yeux et sentir leur puissance et leur force. C'est à l'intérieur de ces affects que vous pouvez comprendre le sujet et voir l'histoire de leur point de vue.
EMBRACE INTERRUPTION: The art of giving
This fall I was given the gift of unexpected space. I got an email from the Pavé D’Orsay gallery explaining that there was a last minute opening for a two-week show a few weeks away and wondering if I would like to do something in the space. I knew I didn’t have the capacity to put together a solo show together so began asking a few friends and artists from La Sorbonne who’s work linked to the theme of identity and home what they thought. What seemed impossibly on my own suddenly became an exciting opportunity to collaborate and create with five female artists.
Life is made up of many moments. I sit 10,000 feet above earth flying from Paris to San Francisco finishing final papers for the semester and scroll through and edit photos from the HOME IS ___ show. I smile and swell up a giddy joy. In these photos I see connection. I see six young female artists sharing their stories and having a platform to create. I see food shared, music that touched the soul (especially Kelaiah as she serenaded a bride and groom as they left the church), dancers finding space to move, poets reciting passionate words, spectators and visitors becoming participants. I see a home and family created in a city that often feels lonely and rootless. I see myself surrounded by supporters and sisters. This is a space for rest, laughter, music and song, poetry, connection and creation. Beyond the white walls of a gallery, this space is made alive by those who fill it. Memories stored within our art… Memories made daily out of the many moments curated. The nations gathered here. The list is long to say thank you to each person who made this exposition a reality. Thank you to everyone who prayed, visited, shared your story and made this space into a place.
